We have moved!
As you might have seen on the Discord, we’re slowly moving away from our current website solution (Webflow) to something more sustainable - in this case, a combination of Notion and Super.so, for those who are curious. If you’re reading this, you’re on the new site - welcome!
Why do this?
Well, there’s a couple reasons, actually.
Firstly, Webflow is expensive - our current bill is about $40 USD per month when you include hosting and domain costs. This has never been paid for by the club, but with the move to an NFP structure, I want to make sure that the club can be self-sufficient, so it’s important to lower costs as much as possible.
Secondly, Webflow is a relatively complex tool that requires quite a lot of knowledge to use. It’s not something I could ever put in the hands of a fellow Tournament Organiser and ask them to create their own event, or enter their own results. In the future - although, not the near future - I’d love for TO’s to be able to manage their own events, and this is a step towards that.
What’s changed?
Well, the website looks quite different. We don’t have quite as much control over the visual elements of the site, so you’ll notice it’s been simplified quite a bit. This does make it more accessible, and also delivers a much better experience on mobile - so hopefully a big plus!
We’re now also sharing a database with the Victorian Wargaming Calendar. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a project I’ve been working on for a few months with the hopes of improving discoverability and player packs for events in Victoria. It’s still in very early stages, but I think it could be a great tool for TO’s and players in the future. Sharing the database with VWC means a lot less work for me - shared events, shared results, shared player database, etc.
Updates to one site can also benefit the other, so this should hopefully mean more frequent improvements to the MM site, and VMC too.
What’s next?
Well, I’ll spend the next few weeks fleshing out the site. You’ll notice merch is missing, as are digital downloads. Both of these will be coming before too long. Additionally, dedicated resources for the Discord, and a way for our TO’s to manage their own events. All of this will take plenty of time, so I hope you’ll stick with me!
After this website is all up and running, the next cab off my rank is memberships. It was a hotly requested feature during last year’s end-of-year survey, and I hope to have it ready soon.
That’s all from me for now. I hope this answered some questions you had, but as always, please come ask me anything on the Discord if you have more questions!
Thanks again for all your love and support <3
