It’s finally here: manage your paint and hobby item collection in Battleplan.
This is a long-requested feature, and I’m so excited to finally be releasing it to you!
We’ve been working had on this feature for a few months now, trying to make it as easy and intuitive as possible to use. While it’s not perfect just yet, we think it’s going to be a super helpful way to manage your collection.
You can dive in and check it out in the app right now - but if you want a sneak peek, here’s a rundown of how it all works:
Managing your Collection
To get started, head to the new ‘Hobby’ tab of the Collections page. Here, you’ll be able to add items to your collection.
We’ve built a database of over 1618 paints, including Citadel, Vallejo, Army Painter, P3, Scale75 Reaper, and my new personal favourite, Two Thin Coats.
You can add an item to your collection by clicking ‘Add to Collection’, and selecting what you want to add. Every item has been sorted by what type of paint it is, who makes it, and what wave or collection it comes from.
Don’t see the item you’re looking for? Click on ‘Create New’ and add the item yourself. Easy!
Creating Recipes
When painting, you’ll often go back to the same tried-and-true formulas that have worked for you in the past. In Battleplan, we call these Recipes. Recipes are a collection of paints or hobby items that you can reuse again and again.
For example, I love the classic Two Thin Coats brown triad for anything leather. So I’ve got a Recipe called TTC Wood, containing the three paints I use for that shade.
Why create recipes you ask? Well, the answer’s quite simple…
Adding Paints to Models
So, you’ve painted up a fresh new model, and you’d like to log what paints you used. In the model view tab, you’ll find the ability to add hobby items and recipes to the model.
Now, of course, you could just add all the paints you used - but that’s going to get tedious when you’re 2000 points into your Ultramarines army and you’re still adding Blood Angels Red to every model. So, we’ve got a better way. Actually, we’ve got two:
Using Recipes
Instead of adding each individual paint every time, you can simply add a recipe to a model. You can still describe how that recipe was used on this specific model, too. This is great for components that are the same across armies, or even across multiple armies/games.
Copy from Model
Already painted something super similar? Great! Simply click ‘Copy from Another Model’, and choose a model that already has all the same details.
This is perfect when you’re painting multiple boxes of the same guys, or even just models that are super similar.
What’s Next
Firstly, we’ll be quickly adding more paints as we can find the time - Kimera and Pro Acryl are the next cab off the rank. We’ll also do a bit of an audit on our existing ones, as some of the swatches don’t quite match.
We also want to allow you to add paints or whole recipes to your page or screenshot when you share a model, so you can share your process with fellow painters.
Finally, we’ll add more sorting tools and the ability to find similar paints - for example, search by ‘Green’ paints, or find a paint similar to a paint you have selected. These features are a little more down the road.
I hope you’re excited about this feature - I know we are! I look forward to seeing what folks do with it, and as always, let us know what you’d like to see next!
